Richmond Boudoir Photographer | Session on the James River | Hannah Louise Photo

There’s something about water that makes people feel more at ease.

This in-nature boudoir session on the James River in Richmond, VA was exactly that kind of evening. Nothing overly styled or staged—just golden hour, soothing water, and a lot of space for her to show up as she was.

And honestly, that’s what I love most about photographing women outdoors like this. It feels less like “performing” and more like returning to yourself.

Boudoir on the James River in Richmond, VA

As a Richmond boudoir photographer, I’ve photographed sessions in homes, studios, and everywhere in between—but sessions like this one on the James River always feel different.

Nature has a way of taking the pressure off.

You’re not trying to fit into a set or a version of yourself. You’re just existing in a place that already has its own rhythm. The water moves. The light shifts. And you kind of fall into it without thinking so hard about how you’re supposed to look.

That’s where the best images happen.

This Is What Self Love Actually Looks Like

I don’t think self love always looks confident or loud or obvious.

Sometimes it looks like:

  • showing up even when you feel unsure

  • letting yourself be photographed in a season where you’re not totally comfortable in your body

  • saying yes before you feel “ready”

That matters more than people realize.

This session wasn’t about forcing confidence. It was about making space for whatever she was actually feeling in that moment — and letting that be enough.

Body Inclusivity Is the Foundation of My Work

Body inclusivity isn’t something I add into my work — it is my work.

At Hannah Louise Photo, every boudoir session is built around the belief that:

  • every body deserves to be photographed with care

  • there is no “before” body you need to fix or change

  • you don’t have to earn your place in front of the camera

I’ve photographed over 300 women over the last five years in boudoir alone, and one thing has stayed consistent through all of it: everyone walks in a little unsure, and leaves seeing themselves a little differently.

Not because they changed — but because they were finally seen without judgment.

Posing, Comfort, and Holding Space

I know boudoir can feel vulnerable.

You’re in varying states of undress, in front of a camera, often in a space that already feels unfamiliar. That’s a lot for anyone.

So my approach is simple:

  • I guide you through posing in a way that still feels like you

  • I don’t rush you through moments just to “get the shot”

  • I give you space when you need to breathe or reset

  • and I pay attention to how you’re actually feeling, not just how things look

The goal is never perfection. It’s comfort first — always.

Because when you feel safe, everything changes in the photos.

Maybe These Photos Aren’t for “Right Now You”

One of the things I think about a lot during sessions like this is how these images might not land the same way today as they will later.

Maybe right now you’re still learning how to feel at home in your body. Maybe you’re not fully there yet.

But these photos might be for:

  • future you who looks back with more softness

  • future you who understands this season differently

  • future you who needed proof you were here, living it

All of your seasons are worth documenting.

Not just the ones where you feel your best.

Richmond Boudoir Photographer | Hannah Louise Photo

If you’re looking for a Richmond boudoir photographer who focuses on body inclusivity, natural connection, and sessions that feel more like an experience than a performance, this is exactly the kind of work I create.

Whether we’re in your home, a studio, or out on the James River in Richmond, VA, the intention stays the same:

You don’t have to become someone else to be photographed.

You already are enough as you are.
