What to Wear to Your Engagement Session (If You Want to Feel Like Yourself)
Richmond Engagement Photographer | Hannah Louise Photo
When couples start planning their engagement session, one of the first questions is always: “What should we wear?”
And the truth is— the best answer isn’t about trends or what’s “bridal.”
As a Richmond engagement photographer, I work with people who are down-to-earth, a little artistic, a little nostalgic, and fully in love with being in love. The kind of people who value connection over perfection. Who would rather be barefoot in the grass than standing stiff in something that doesn’t feel like them.
So when it comes to choosing outfits, the goal isn’t to look like someone else.
It’s to feel like you.
Start with What Feels Natural to You
Your style already tells a story— lean into that.
If you love vintage pieces, earthy textures, flowy fabrics, or timeless basics, bring those into your session. If your everyday look is relaxed and effortless, your engagement session should feel the same.
You don’t need to dress up into something unrecognizable unless that genuinely excites you.
Because the most meaningful photos happen when you feel grounded, present, and comfortable in your own skin.
Comfort Over Perfection— Always
My sessions are built around movement and connection — walking, laughing, holding each other, maybe even dancing a little.
So your outfit should support that, not fight against it.
Choose pieces that:
Let you move freely and comfortably
Don’t need constant adjusting
Feel good from the moment you put them on
Skip anything too tight, restrictive, or fussy. This is not the time for stilettos you can’t walk in or outfits you have to “manage.”
Barefoot? Honestly, encouraged.
Let Your Personality Come Through
This is where it gets fun.
Your engagement session is a space where personality is not only welcome— it’s what makes your photos yours.
Funky hats, cool sunglasses, layered jewelry, vintage jackets, textured fabrics— these little details can add so much life and individuality without taking over the image.
Layers, especially, are incredible for movement. A flowy dress, an open button-down, a loose sweater— they create softness and motion that photograph beautifully.
You don’t have to play it safe. You just want to stay intentional.
Keep the Focus on You, Not the Outfit
While personality is important, your clothes shouldn’t be the loudest thing in the frame.
Bright colors can absolutely work, but if they’re overpowering, they can pull attention away from what actually matters— your connection.
Instead, consider:
Earthy tones and neutrals
Muted colors that complement your surroundings
Textures over bold, busy patterns
Think of your outfit as supporting the moment, not competing with it.
You Don’t Have to Look “Bridal”
There’s no rule that says your engagement session has to feel like a pre-wedding photoshoot.
If you want to dress it up, go for it. But if your version of love looks like denim, linen, bare feet, and wind in your hair— that’s more than enough.
Some of the most powerful sessions I photograph are the ones that feel the most like real life. A little messy, a little playful, deeply connected.
Hair & Makeup: Keep It You (Just Elevated)
If you’re considering professional hair and makeup, think of it as an enhancement— not a transformation.
The goal isn’t full glam (unless that’s your thing). It’s to:
Take pressure off getting ready
Help you feel confident and relaxed
Slightly elevate your natural look in a way that still feels like you
Soft, natural, and comfortable will always photograph better than something that feels overdone or unfamiliar.
At the end of the day, what you wear matters far less than how you feel in it.
The best outfits are the ones that allow you to:
Be fully yourself
Move freely
Stay present with your partner
Because your engagement session isn’t about looking perfect. It’s about capturing the way you exist together— grounded, joyful, a little wild, and completely in love. And that’s what you’ll actually want to remember.
